Math
Today we did an assessment on multiples and factors. As we move into the week, we will be learning about area and perimeter and the formulas that go with each measurement.

Science
Students did mini presentations to the class on their research and learning about the planets.  We also used 'moon pops' to demonstrate the phases of the moon.

Literacy
Throughout the week, students will be working on the first several stages of writing a newspaper article.

Art
On Thursday, students will be using their knowledge of shading, perspective and light to create a planet art picture with chalk pastels.

Reminders:
-Alternate Outdoor School meeting for parents that missed the first one. We will be having our second meeting on Tuesday February 4th at 3:30-4:00 in the Learning Commons. This is a mandatory requirement, if you missed the first meeting please attend this one to ensure you have all the information regarding our Outdoor School trip coming up in March.
-NO School on Friday January 31st

Please note I will be away for the remainder of the week. I will not be able to respond to emails or phone messages.  Mrs. D. Prediger will be our guest teacher.  If there is an urgent matter, please contact the office.

Science
Students continued with their planet  and moon research. As part of our moon learning we will be creating a moon scape out of salt clay.

We are asking for each student to bring in some home made salt clay to contribute to the class project.
Please bring it in for Friday January 24

Recipe
1 cup salt
2 cups of flour
¾ cup of water

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a large bowl mix salt and flour together.
  2. Gradually stir in water. Mix well until it forms a doughy consistency.
  3. Turn the dough onto the table and knead with your hands until smooth and combined.
  4. Place in a ziplock container and store in the fridge.
Thank you for you help with our science work.

Math
We are continuing our work with factors and multiples and will be having a test on Monday.

Science
Students continued with their planet research. After independent research time, students shared some of their findings with a partner to learn from each other.

Math
'Mystery Number'. Students were given a few factors of a number and had to use their understanding of factors and multiples to solve the problem. We will continue with this on Monday.

Thank you Friday
Students made a mini thank you note to another student at their table.

Friday Journals
Students wrote for approximately 25 minutes to summarize and share their understanding of the learning we did this week. (Sky Science - survivor moon/planet research/reasons for the seasons/vocabulary,  math - factors and multiples, literacy -  Australian wild fires article/how to make annotated notes when reading for comprehension, etc)

Science
We have been researching planets. Each student is researching 2 planets (one rocky planet and one gas planet).

Questions students are using as a guide for their research

Answer the following questions in your creative journal in complete sentences.  Make sure your answers are written in your own words.

  1. What is a planet?
  2. Why is Pluto no longer considered a planet?
  3. Describe the two main types of planets.
  4. Describe the two different ways planets move.

Now, you will be researching two of the planets in our solar system, one inner and one outer planet, using the following sites in Learn Alberta and/or books.
  • Britannica School
  • Power Knowledge- Earth and Space Science
  • ScienceFlix
  • TrueFlix
  • Space Books

Your research must include (point form notes are okay):

  • Name of your planet
  • Where your planet is in relation to the other planets
  • Completed fact sheet
  • Notes on the surface of your planet
  • Weather on your planet
  • What makes your planet unique, or different from the other planets?
  • Other important and interesting information you learned about your planet

Students watched videos, did demonstrations and created a visual journal page on the reason for the seasons.

Math
We have been working on multiples and factors and patterns. Students are applying their understanding of prime and composite numbers.

Literacy
As part of our Sky Science, we are reading current event articles that pertain to this subject. We started reading an article about a teen who was doing an internship with NASA and discovered a planet. Students are working on employing a variety of reading comprehension strategies and watching them being modeled.

Thursday January 9th, 2020

Science
This week we have been doing a provocation for inspiration to correlate with our sky science learning. We viewed and discussed several clips from the movie 'October Sky'.   Students have been reviewing and deepening their understanding of the phases of the moon, using a variety of strategies to understand and remember new vocabulary (altitude, aphelion, asteroids, asterism) and discuss attributes of the planets.

Math
Students have been working on decoding a pattern with numbers and colours to determine commonalities, factors, multiples and pattern rules. See attached photo.

Literacy/Current Events
Students read an article about the usage of drones. They have been working on using their reading comprehension skills and strategies to: summarize, ask questions, make connections and answer questions.

Outdoor School Parent Information Meeting - January 23 @6:00

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are very excited to be taking our grade 6 students to Outdoor School at Camp Chief Hector from March 9-12, 2020. The students will spend 4 days and 3 nights participating in the ECOSchool program.  The program aims to develop environmental awareness and community building in an outdoor setting for students in grade 6.

In preparation for this learning experience, we are pleased to welcome Chris Schmid from Camp Chief Hector to a Parent Information evening at Bridlewood on Thursday, January 23rd from 6 - 7 pm in the school gymnasium.

This is a mandatory meeting that we require at least one parent to attend as we must ensure we provide an opportunity for parents to receive all relevant information and have any questions or concerns addressed.  Students are welcome and encouraged to attend as well.  We will have you sign in and then provide you with an information package for you to take with you to prepare for this exciting learning opportunity.

Respectfully,
Grade 6 Team
