Friday September 27th

Friday Journals
Please look for your child's pink Friday Journal coming home again today. Take some time to read and respond to their writing. We had approximately 40 minutes of writing time today to create a web and complete sentences.  Please return them on Monday.

Science
As part of our learning on Trees and Forests, we learned about the nutrient cycle today. Students began creating a diagram to add to their VSJ.

Thursday September 26th

Terry Fox Run:
We watched the video about Terry called "Anything's Possible". Students created a page with words to describe Terry and chose a quote from him to go along with our 'Say Something' theme this year. 


Science
Today we reviewed photosynthesis. Ask about the elements involved in plants making their own food and how that is part of a food chain as well.

Wednesday September 25th

Literacy
Students read the Electric Scooter article independently and started work on their questions. As part of our appreciation and honoring of Terry Fox, everyone created a page in their VSJ representing Terry's story or a story of their own related to his battle.

Science
Today we created vocabulary cards for some science terms (producer, consumer, decomposer).We discussed examples of each and how they are part of the interdependency in food chains.

Math
Students are working on fraction and decimal review.

Reminders:
-Terry Fox run tomorrow at 1:15 (remember to bring a toonie for Terry) please dress for the weather, we will be running rain or shine.

Tuesday September 24th

Literacy
As part of Current Events, we discussed and read an article about the 'Shared Electric Scooter Pilot' program occurring in Calgary. Students will be using their reading comprehension strategies to answer questions related to the article.

Science
Today we observed leaves and used our scientific skills to sort and classify them. Ask about: shape, type, margins, and arrangements. Students did leaf rubbings and identified several aspects of a variety of leaves. We also began a 'scavenger hunt' to find different leaves on the trees around our school ground.

Math
Students are continuing with review of decimals and fractions.

Monday September 23rd

Math
We did a check-in for division (3-digit divided by 1-digit) using standard algorithm.  If this is an area your child is still needing help with please support them with time in the evenings to practice. Also, having basic multiplication and division facts (up to 10 x 10).  Today we also reviewed decimals and fractions. Converting decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals as well as creating equivalent fractions (all grade 5 review). 


Science:
The students are finishing a Visual Sketch Journal Page (VSJ) depicting the layers of the forest with accompanying information about each layer. Ask them to explain the different aspects of each forest layer.

Friday Journals
Thank you for sending back the pink journal books today. Please remember to take some time to respond to your child's work in their journal and return every Monday morning.

Friday September 13th


Art/Literacy
Yesterday we learned about the artist Roy Lichtenstein  and discussed his Pop Art style. The students worked on creating a self-portrait from a photo and incorporated some aspects of this style. They continued with the dots and solids using three colours only to put their personal flavour into their own work. HOMEWORK -students need to come with a meaningful quote to go with their artwork on Monday. This quote should have a deep message, be personal to them and inspire/encourage themselves and others. 

Science:
Yesterday was our first field study down by the pond. Students made observations of living and non-living things, sketched a variety of leaves and trees and identified several different deciduous and coniferous trees. HOMEWORK - students are asked to research the name of a specific grove of trees growing by the pond and come with answers for Monday.

Friday Journals
Please check your child's Friday Journal (pink book) that is coming home today and take some time to read the introduction letter in the front of the book. These journals are due back every Monday morning.

-Vaccinations will be on Tuesday September 17th
-Patrol Training Wednesday morning September 18th (anyone interested in being a patrol or returning patrol needs to attend the training in order to be on the patrol team)

Highlights From Today:
-had gym and music
-created concept cards for our math 'toolbox' (multiplication strategies and place value)
-practiced reading strategies for good reading comprehension (Connections, Visualization, Inferencing)
-continued our provocation on the Methuselah Tree in science.
-first fire drill of the year.

-please return vaccination forms (sent home yesterday) by Friday Sept. 13
-Pond Field Study tomorrow 8:45-11:00
